DescriptionBorn Alexander Watson he assumed the name of Alexander Watson Wemyss when his wife came into the property of Denbrae near St Andrews in 1846. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1821 and received his medical degree from St Andrews in 1840. Wemyss was formerly one of the surgeons to the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, and took an active part in founding the Edinburgh Eye Infirmary. He wrote treatises on 'Diseases of the Eye', on 'Homicide by External Violence', and on 'Legislation for the Insane', besides various pamphlets on the construction of hospitals and of lunatic asylums. He was for some time an active member of the board of management of the Fife and Kinross District Lunatic Asylum. He died on February 4th 1879.
