Description Of ItemThe volume, written by Buchan's elder daughter Ivory Buchan, includes: a synopsis of Alexander Buchan's letters; an introduction which gives biographical information and background to the letters; annotations to the letters from 1931-1943; list of books read and music heard as mentioned in the letters; an explanation of the way in which Buchan signed his letters; Buchan's obituaries from The Scotsman and Banker's Magazine; copies of letters by Buchan published in The Scotsman; and a memoir of Buchan's father, also Alexander Buchan (1829-1907), to accompany portraits at what was their residence, 42 Heriot Row.

Alexander Buchan graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh in 1893. He was assistant physician at Leith Hospital and Medical Officer at
Cowgate Dispensary but was best known for his large private practice in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of the famous meteorologist also named Alexander Buchan. The letters cover 1874-1943 with details of life during the Second World War.
