| Description | Clayton graduated MB ChB from the University of Edinburgh in 1946, gaining a PhD in 1949 and a MD in 1953 also from Edinburgh, Scotland. From 1947-1949 she worked as a research assistant in the Clinical Endocrinology Research Unit of the University of Edinburgh. In 1949 she became the Holden Research Fellow in the Department of Chemical Pathology at St Thomas' Hospital Medical School, London, England.
