TitleConsultation letter books of William Cullen
Date1764-1790
Description Of ItemThis series contains Cullen's out-going correspondence and case notes in volumes. From 1764-1781 out-going letters were copied by hand into the volumes. After 1781 (CUL/1/1/13) Cullen's letters were copied, using James Watt's wet letter process, and glued on to pages in guard books.

From 1768-1781 each volume, unless indicated otherwise, has a list of cases by case number and an alphabetical index by correspondent with the date of each letter. These two indexes post-date the creation of the volume. Contemporary with the creation of the volume is a list of correspondents by page number. After 1781 each volume, again unless indicated otherwise, has a list of cases and an alphabetical index by correspondent as part of the volume and a contemporary index by page number. Each case has a case note and also in some instances a prescription. Where a volume contains original items, this is indicated in the entry. These originals may not necessarily be items by Cullen.

The dates of the volumes overlap, quite considerably in the case of CUL/1/1/1 and CUL/1/1/2. Also these first two volumes were not allocated volume numbers at the time of the creation of the indexes by case and correspondent so may have been seen as outside the sequence in some way. The volume numbers given in the entries are as stated on the indexes. No volume numbers are given on the outside of the volumes.
