Description Of ItemHamilton discovered that his father was the illegitimate son of the Comte de la Rochepalliére. The letters are concerned with confirmation of his grandfather's war service and Hamilton's persistent claim to his grandfather's title and a cross of the Legion of Honour. The correspondence includes letters from the Marquis de Lafayette and his cousin the Duc de Mouchy. There are papers that were used in the claim, including his memorial to King Charles X, amongst the family papers at HAL/4.
