Title[Lectures on midwifery by James Hamilton]
Datec1818-c1839
Description Of ItemThis section contains the lectures on midwifery of James Hamilton the younger. The nature of the amendments to the text (small word changes as well as more substantial inserts) indicate that the volumes at least belonged to Hamilton even if he did not necessarily write them; the handwriting does change in the course of each volume. Although they have been bound as a series there is some doubt as to whether they do form a consistent series: lecture numbers are not consecutive; the paper within a volume is often different implying that items were written at different times; lectures are not necessarily complete or are interrupted by other text. Therefore this section should not be viewed as the coherent body of work that the binding implies. Volume 10 in the 'series' is missing.

According to the original manuscripts catalogue these were dated 1824-1825. Throughout many of the volumes there are annotations giving the point at which a particular lecture ended and a date. Although many of these are 1824-25 other later dates are also given. The dates for each entry reflect the latests of these annotations. Where no date could be found, the date has been given as 1830s. Where lecture numbers are given in a volume these have been added to the entries, but most of the lectures are not numbered.
