Title[The hand of God moulding man by Noel Paton]
Date2 Jan 1897
Description Of ItemFrom the collection of Alexander Peddie. Large pencil illustration showing an arm emerging from clouds holding what may be a heart and passing through two rings. Inscription reads 'My Dear Dr. Peddie - I have much pleasure in signing this rough diagram, made so many years ago for our dear friend 'Dr. John' - Noel Paton, 2nd Jany, 1897'. This could be Joseph Noel Paton the artists or possibly his son Diarmid Noel Paton who was Professor of Physiology at Glasgow University. The Dr John referred to is almost certainly John Brown, the author of Rab and his Friends. The text below the dedication reads 'He is not far from every one of us, for 'in him we love and more, and have our being' - out of the darkness comes the hand reaching through nature - moulding man'. There is a further annotation that this was given to Dr Peddie by Dr John Brown and used by him in giving his health lectures.
