Description Of ItemDr George Cleghorn was born in Cramond, north west of Edinburgh, son of William Cleghorn and Helen Pullans. Trained in medicine at the University of Edinburgh from the age of 15 under Alexamnder Monro Primus. Cleghorn joined the British Army as Surgeon for the 22nd Regiment of Foot and served from 1736 to 1749 in Minorca. The Regiment was transferred to Ireland in 1749 and Leghorn went to Dublin. His book Epidemical Diseases in Minorca from the Year 1744 to 1749 was published in London in 1751. Cleghorn set up medical practice in Dublin in 1751 and developed a very successful and prosperous practice. He had his portrait in pastel drawn by the Dublin pastelist William Watson in 1763. He was appointed lecturer in anatomy to Trinity College, Dublin in 1761 and later around 1785 the first Professor in Anatomy at Trinity. He retired in 1786.
