Description Of ItemOil on canvas, 75 x 62 cm

John Burt was one of an Edinburgh medical dynasty. He was educated at the High School and Edinburgh University and while travelling on the Continent graduated with a MD at the University of Giessen in 1826.

His presidency covered a period of division within the College related to the Medical Act of that time and he was closely concerned with the erection and adornment of the New Hall. Professionally he devoted himself to private practice but using his love of art he published some excellent drawings of surgical anatomy. He was consulting physician to the North British Insurance Company and Surgeon in Scotland to King William IV. His place in society was reflected by his membership of the Royal Company of Archers and the High Constables of Edinburgh.
