John Croom had an impressive Edinburgh medical pedigree. His grandfather (also Sir John Halliday Croom) was professor of midwifery in the University of Edinburgh and his father, Dr David Halliday Croom, was a respected general practitioner in this city.
Educated at Glenalmond School and Cambridge and Edinburgh Universities, he graduated with an MB ChB in 1933. He became a clinical tutor at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and in 1939 joined the Royal Army Medical Corps, serving until 1945 as a medical specialist with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. His service in France, the Middle East and Italy merited his being mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Territorial Decoration. From 1946 to 1974 he was a consultant physician to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with a special interest in diabetes and metabolic disorders. In addition, he was Principal Medical Officer to the Standard Life Assurance Company, the Royal Bank of Scotland and the Northern Lighthouse Board.
