Born in Edinburgh, son of James Hart, a printer, David Berry Hart graduated with a MB, CM from Edinburgh in 1877. He was assistant to Professor Sir Alexander R Simpson. An obstetrician and gynaecologist, David Berry Hart was highly regarded by his colleagues and made notable contributions to the advancement of his specialty. In 1882 he published, along with Dr Freeland Barbour, 'The Manual of Gynaecology' which was described as the first really scientific textbook on the subject in the English language. As a Fellow of the Obstetrical Society of Edinburgh, he served as Secretary and President; he contributed 72 papers to the transactions. He was the first gynaecologist in Scotland to operate successfully on a case of ruptured tubal pregnancy. Dr Berry Hart distinguished himself as a Fellow of the College by being Honorary Librarian for 18 years. He was a Fellow of the American Gynaecological Society, and the Berlin Obstetrical Society.
