Born in Edinburgh, Thomas Grainger Stewart (1837–1900) was educated at Edinburgh's High School and obtained a MD from Edinburgh University in 1858. He carried out postgraduate study in Berlin, Prague and Vienna, before becoming house physician to Professor Laycock at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.

Early in his career he was appointed lecturer on Materia Medica in the Extra-Mural School. On his appointment as pathologist to the Royal Infirmary, Dr Grainger Stewart became lecturer on pathology in place of materia medica. Later, he took over the lectureship of Practices of Medicine when he was given charge of medical wards in the Royal Infirmary. When Professor Laycock died in 1876 the decision of the Court of Edinburgh University to elect Dr Grainger Stewart to the Chair of Medicine met with full acclamation. Professor Grainger Stewart was honoured by being appointed Physician to Queen Victoria and by receiving a knighthood.
