Description Of ItemPress cuttings of pages 55 to 56 from the Medical Circular, originally published on 26 July 1865. Consist of two cuttings. Reports the findings of a paper by Étienne Lancereaux, given to the French Academy of Medicine, ‘on the changes produced by the abuse of alcohol’. Lancereaux found that alcohol is responsible for lesions especially in the liver (cirrhose) and veinous system, but also in the brain (as well as in the arachnoid and pia mater), and the kidneys. Also notes that excessive alcohol consumption has effects on the brain and produce an ‘anticipated senility’ with ‘progressive atrophy of the brain’.
