He returned to Totnes and applied for relief and was admitted into the Totnes Union house and then transferred to the ‘Devonport Lunatic Asylum’ where ‘in the Workhouse there he attempted to commit buggery’. He talks about enlisting as a soldier and getting dismissed. He details how when he was fifteen he looked ‘under the clothes of females passing the house through a hole in the wooden trap that covered our Workshop’. He talks of masturbating since he was 15 years old. He details a time when he thought about cutting his throat but could not do it.
