Description Of ItemThe collection comprises four files containing 319 black and white digital photographs of medical student life in Edinburgh during the 1960s. No hard copies of the digital images are held. The photographs are split into four categories: Cowan House, Eastern General Hospital, medical students at social events and student days at Edinburgh. The subjects of the images include students, teachers, lectures and classes, accommodation, medical practice and social events.

The photographs were taken by John Guy, a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon who studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and graduated MBChB in the class of 1963. During his medical career he worked at the Worcester Royal Infirmary for 25 years as a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon. He also carried out research into the bone-cement junction with Sir John Charnley CBE [Commander of the British Empire], a pioneering figure in hip replacement surgery. John Guy was also previously Chairman of World Orthopaedic Concern – UK, a charity dedicated to improving the standard of orthopaedic, trauma and reconstructive surgery in developing countries.
