TitleWilliam Cullen's lectures on materia medica, volume 1
Date2 Nov 1748
Description Of ItemThe volume starts with Lecture II. A note at the start of the volume states that Lecture I (incomplete) can be found at folio 188 (two-thirds through the volume) and is dated (the rest of the volume is not). Lectures II-VI are consecutive followed by Lectures X-XIII, then Lecture XVI-XVII. After this the writing becomes more thematic with sections 'On Air', 'Of Solution' and 'Reflections on the First Part' which is followed by Lecture VII. Then there is a return to themes 'Of Sulphur', 'Of Distillation and Fusion', 'Boerhaave on Fire', 'Of Transmutation' and 'Of Fire'. After Lecture I there is a section headed 'Materia Medica' followed by 'M M Lecture I' (which is different from the previous Lecture I), 'M M Lecture II', 'Of the Composition of Medicines', 'Combination and Composition in Pharmacy', 'Of the Medical Virtues of the Neutral Salts', 'Medical Virtues of Oils', 'Medical Virtues of Alkalines', 'Medical Virtues of Fixed and Volatile Alkali', 'Quicksilver', 'Medical Virtues of Mercury' and 'Medical Virtues of Antimony'. There is often more than one part to each section. The paper is of varying sizes so must have been bound at a later date. Because the volume consists of separate note the date range will almost certainly be wider than the one dated item. Described in the original manuscript catalogue as 'in his own hand'.
