Description Of ItemTwo leaflets, titled ‘Idiocy and Imbecility,’ containing the notes of seven patients who are unable to speak, describing their symptoms. The names of two patients are given under the title ‘dementia’ in the second leaflet. From the collection of Thomas Laycock.

Excerpt from case one: ‘Andrew [illegible] aet 37. Native of Dunfermline – admitted 12th July 1846. History [illegible].’ The notes describe the ‘present condition’ of the patient who is ‘dumb + in all probability deaf as well, though it is somewhat difficult to determine whether he is, or not. He does no work; […] his appetite for food is voracious[…].’
