| Description Of Item | Press cutting from an unknown publication [the Scotsman?], published in June 1869. An article, originally published in the Times, about the number of deaths in England due to ‘intemperance’ or alcohol intoxication. Only the deaths directly related to excessive drinking could be known, not the deaths from illnesses brought on or facilitated by alcoholism. It notes that from 1858 to 1867, a total of 8370 deaths linked with drunkenness were reported: of these 3527 from intemperance, and 4843 from delirium tremens.
