It covers the principles and definitions of ‘voluptuous or pleasurable (or hedonic) effects’, including feelings of euphoria, vanity, as well as mental and corporeal pleasures, the influence of pleasure on corporeal states (such as on blood circulation), the cerebro-spinal centre of the feeling. It also acknowledges ‘nature and variation of corporeal desire’. It then focuses on tobacco, alcohol, opium eating, and their respective effects and possible treatments (for both moral and physical symptoms). Includes an index.
