TitlePress cutting from the Medical Times and Gazette, regarding alcohol in the public attention of France
Date1871
Description Of ItemPress cutting of page 288 from the Medical Times and Gazette, originally published on 2 September 1871. Report on a communication made by Théophile Roussel to the [French] Academy of Medicine. He was a member of both this Academy and the Chamber of Deputies. Alcoholism was seemingly one of the most pressing matters ‘occupying public attention in France, all kinds of evils, whether political, military, or social, having been explained of late by’ the abuse of ‘alcoholic drinks’. The communication ‘related chiefly to the legislative measures necessary to arrest the course of drinking habits’. However, the report remains sceptical as to the ‘evil of drinking’.
