| Description Of Item | Patient case notes describing the health of Mary Innes, also called Betsy Wilson, a 19-year-old ‘prostitute’ who lived at the ‘Greenhouse’ on Leith Street Terrace. She was admitted to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary on 10 March 1864 with vomiting, a headache and stomach pain, and was treated by Thomas Laycock and Dyce Duckworth. The notes contain a patient history which describe how she became involved with sex work. Detailed descriptions of her physical condition and her treatments are given from 12 March 1864 until 1 April 1864, when she died. An autopsy was performed and the condition of her chest, heart, lungs, spleen, kidneys and reproductive organs were reported. Her heart is described in most detail. The notes were written by J.B. Wright. Thomas Laycock has written ‘pericarditis’, ‘aneurism of aortic valve’ and ‘embolism’ on the front page of the notes. |
